Our Ensembles

Concert Band

Our concert wind ensemble rehearses weekly on Thursdays from 7-9 pm at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Kansas City, MO. The concert season runs from August-May, with rehearsals beginning in late August.

Jazz Bands

MAFB operates two jazz ensembles: Mighty Mo Jazz Orchestra, an auditioned jazz band and Mighty Mo Swing Band, an open to all jazz ensemble. These groups perform at various events throughout the calendar year, including outdoor events and parades. These award-winning ensembles are conducted by Jessie Davis.

Spirit Pep Band & Color Guard

MAFB Spirit Pep Band is a marching/pep band that performs at AIDSWalk, KC PrideFest, the Brookside Warm-Up Parade, and more. This group is directed by Greg Hahn and includes a color guard, directed by Steven Irving.

Welcome to the jungle! With an overarching theme of “Party Animals!” the Mid America Freedom Band celebrates its 21st concert band season from all corners of the animal kingdom with music from your favorite films, music halls, and new discoveries from historically queer composers and today’s most talented voices. Join us this season to hear Igor Stravinsky’s Firebird, Camille Saint-Saëns’ Carnival of the Animals, John Williams’ Jaws, Danielle Fisher’s reimagining of Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake, Viet Cuong’s Howls and Hymns from trombone and band, a new commissioned work by Sonya Leonore Stahl, and so much more.

Twenty years of growth, milestones, and music making is certainly something to celebrate! Mid America Freedom Band continues to showcase the most diverse array of composers writing for concert band. With emphasis on Missouri and Midwestern composers this season, MAFB also pulls from its extensive library of commissioned works to give them a second hearing. This season culminates in a Spring Concert held at the beautifully remodeled Folly Theater for a program that is not to be missed.

CALL FOR PROPOSALS 2022: NEW WORK FOR CHAMBER WINDS AND PERCUSSION

The Show-Me Pride Ensembles d/b/a Mid America Freedom Band is accepting proposals for a new work for chamber winds and percussion, from composers regardless of age, nationality, or style. The proposed 6–7 minute long original piece will be performed by members of the Mid America Freedom Band during the ensemble’s next educational concert anticipated in the 2021–22 season.
