Mid America Freedom Band Appoints Dr. Daniel Kirk as Artistic Director
The Mid America Freedom Band (MAFB) is proud to announce the appointment of Dr. Daniel Kirk as its new Artistic Director, beginning December 1, 2025. Dr. Kirk brings a distinguished record of music education, ensemble leadership, and community engagement that aligns closely with MAFB’s mission to create inclusive, high-quality musical experiences and share Pride in Every Note.
Dr. Kirk currently serves as a Learning and Development professional with the Johnson County Library system. He previously held a conducting faculty position at Reinhardt University and directed bands at both Blue Valley Northwest and Blue Valley West High Schools in Overland Park, Kansas. During his tenure, his ensembles earned the highest Kansas state-level honors awarded by the National Foundation for Music Education and were selected to perform at the Kansas Music Educators’ Convention.
Nationally, Dr. Kirk is recognized for his leadership in music education. He is a recipient of the George N. Parks Leadership in Music Education Award, one of the most respected honors in the field, and has been invited to present at the world-renowned Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic.
He holds degrees from Missouri Western State University, Northwestern University, and Michigan State University. Dr. Kirk credits mentors Mallory Thompson, Avian Bear, David Bennett, Jane Wheat, and Kevin Sedatole for shaping his musical outlook and professional path.
“The search committee was inspired by Daniel’s musical vision, inclusive leadership style, and commitment to community-centered music making,” said Jessie Davis, Assistant Artistic Director. “His experience and passion will help guide MAFB into an exciting new chapter as we continue to grow our impact across Kansas City.”
Dr. Kirk shared his enthusiasm for the role. “It’s a true joy to join the Mid America Freedom Band family,” said Kirk. “I’m excited to celebrate our community, create inspiring musical experiences, and build on the legacy that makes MAFB such a special part of Kansas City. The heart, energy, and inclusivity of this ensemble are extraordinary.”
Daniel lives in Kansas City with his partner David, an elementary music teacher. Together they are proud dog parents to two basset hounds, Lucy and Hazel. Outside of music, Daniel also teaches fitness classes at Woodside.
The Mid America Freedom Band, founded in 2002, is a community ensemble dedicated to providing a welcoming place for LGBTQ+ musicians and allies to perform, connect, and celebrate diversity through music.
